If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room:

One of the best pieces of career advice I ever received was this: “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” At first, it didn’t fully make sense to me. Why wouldn’t I want to be the most knowledgeable among my peers?

But over time, I’ve come to truly understand the wisdom in those words. Being the smartest means you’ve peaked – there’s nowhere left to grow from those around you. But when you challenge yourself with people who are smarter, you have everything to gain.

Now I make a conscious effort to seek out communities, projects, and roles where I’m learning from others. Where their expertise exceeds my own, so I can absorb their best practices, discover new perspectives, and push past what I currently know. It’s humbling at times, but the payoff in terms of my development is immense.

Surrounding yourself with intelligences greater than your own creates an environment primed for accelerated learning and evolution. You learn new skills at a faster rate. Insights you may have never uncovered alone are revealed. Doors open to opportunities and connections you didn’t even know existed.

Plus, it keeps you on your toes! Knowing there are sharp minds in the room ensures you always come prepared to contribute at the highest level. You can’t afford to rest on your laurels.

So if you find yourself the resident expert, take that as a sign it’s time to expand your horizons. Put yourself in situations where you have the most to gain from others. The rewards of being a student far outweigh any temporary benefits of perceived mastery. Keep leveling up by surrounding yourself with people who are always one step ahead.

Thank you for reading!
